Cyfarthfa Castle and a National Gallery of Contemporary Art: An Investigative Study

CAO was appointed by the Cyfarthfa Foundation, established to lead the long-term transformation of Cyfarthfa Castle and Park, to develop two pieces of work:

  1. Feasibility study for the Grade 1 listed Cyfarthfa Castle and Park in Merthyr Tydfil to turn it into a National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales

  2. Art at Cyfarthfa report which appraised the museum’s current collection, building, and site in relation to future art programming in the Castle and its extensive bio-diverse parkland.

CAO, in collaboration with Swansea University's Centre for Heritage and Research Training, Architects Hill Harvey-Wood, and Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects, conducted extensive consultation with local stakeholders – from the local authority through to local, national and international artists, and community groups. The investigation focused on identifying the best use of existing space, assessing the need for new facilities, and developing a comprehensive creative programme. Public engagement and consultation were central to the process, ensuring that the project aligned with the needs and aspirations of the local community.

These two pieces of work have been seen as vital in strengthening the sense of pride and identity in the area and providing hope and opportunity especially for the young people of Merthyr Tydfil and the south-Wales Valleys in general.
