Options Appraisal for Public Engagement with the Monotype Collection
Science Museum Group
In 2022, the Monotype Collection, containing more than 2 million individual items, was relocated to the National Collections Centre in Wroughton.
The Science Museum Group (SMG) commissioned CAO to envision the collection's future, aiming to maximise its engagement, accessibility, and research potential.
Our work focused on three primary areas:
Engagement and Research Opportunities: CAO examined how the collection could meet current audience needs, foster connections with local organisations and educational institutions, and engage both local and online audiences, from specialists to general enthusiasts. We identified potential themes, research opportunities, and partnerships to enhance the collection’s relevance and accessibility.
Exhibition and Display Opportunities: We assessed opportunities for online and physical engagement, including handling collections, to create meaningful public experiences. This involved exploring cost-effective options, timelines, and potential partnerships.
Stakeholder Engagement and Typographic Collection Context: CAO compiled a comprehensive map of key stakeholders, including interest groups, local historians, and those interested in reviving parts of the collection. Additionally, we provided SMG with a comparative analysis of similar typographic collections, including public offerings from other institutions.
CAO’s recommendations are now helping SMG shape the Monotype Collection as a vital resource within their broader Printing, Writing, and Textile collections, fostering new ways to connect with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
